Streetwear originally rose to fame on the backs of the biggest hip-hop artists in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. This included artists such as LL Cool J and Eminem pioneering styles that never held back, and spoke straight from the heart. One such group that served to revolutionise streetwear is the East Coast based Wu Tang Clan.
With members including Method Man, RZA, Ghostface Killah and friends, the rap crew known as the Wu Tang Clan took the music industry by storm in the early 90s, before revolutionising streetwear fashion. Their philosophy and bigger than life attitude was encapsulated in iconic designs that defined a generation. This is most notable with their signature Wu Tang t-shirt, still worn by millions around the world.
Never was the presence of the Wu Tang Clan felt more powerfully than back in 1993, when the East Coast crew released their debut album ' Enter the Wu Tang'. This included big hits such as 'Protect Ya Neck' and 'C.R.E.AM' revolutionising 90s hip hop, with big beats that are still reworked and revamped by artists today.
Streetwear tees for a new generation
Now, some 20 years later the east coast crew that was once the only name worth knowing in hip-hop, is collaborating with HUF, the only name worth knowing in streetwear, to bring a signature streetwear clothing line to the market.
Like the Wu Tang Clan, HUF founder Keith Hufnagel is another man with his finger on the pulse of culture and style. A self-made entrepreneur in the fashion industry he has defined a signature brand that has influenced major labels around the world. HUF T-shirts such as the 'Etch a Sketch' tee has established HUF designs as bold and outstanding in the streetwear market.
This isn't the first time Hufnagel has made headlines alongside other major players in the fashion industry, though. Past collaborations with HUF have included Reebok, Nike, and skatewear giant Vans, with whom Hufnagel manufacture a signature line of skate shoes.
A collaboration for the ages
In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Wu Tang's debut record 'Enter the Wu Tang', the two behemoths are now collaborating to bring the 'capsule collection' to shelves. These are a selection of gritty streetwear pieces that capture the life and soul that the original album represented 20 years ago.
The collection is said to include a pair of signature HR-1 sneakers, a snapback, and a Wu Tang football jersey. According to a recent press statement by the group, each piece will be available in either black or gold, and will presumably carry the iconic Wu Tang Clan logo.
More than just hype
The soon to be iconic collection is reportedly set for a public release near the end of February, with the full line shipping to stores across the U.S and worldwide soon after. Industry experts are already reporting the release, and major fashion labels are set to react accordingly to the frighteningly fast hype generated around the collaboration's new products.
